Correcting gel or acrylic nails is a mandatory procedure that should be performed regularly to keep your manicure neat and well-groomed. However, it is important not only from an aesthetic point of view. The fact is that over time, your own nails grow back, the balance of the structure shifts, and the coating begins to peel away from the base. If you don't make corrections in time, there is a risk that the artificial material will break, thereby damaging the natural nail plate.
In this article, we will tell you how to correct extended nails, what types of correction exist, and how to care for your nails after the procedure.
What is nail correction?
Correction of extended nails is a procedure performed by a manicurist to restore and renew the artificial coating. During this procedure, regrown areas near the cuticle are removed, and cracks, chips, and unevenness are eliminated. The design, shape, and length of the nails are also changed during the procedure. Technicians recommend having corrections done every 2–4 weeks. This is enough time to maintain the health of natural nails and extend the life of the coating.
What is included in the procedure
Gel nail correction is a comprehensive professional procedure consisting of several stages:
- Assessment of the condition of the coating. The technician examines the client's nails and determines how much the coating has grown out and whether there is any damage.
- Nail and cuticle treatment. A drill is used to remove old material from the regrowth areas, followed by a hygienic manicure.
- Surface alignment. A new layer of gel or acrylic is applied to the regrowth area and the correct nail architecture is formed.
- Shape and length correction. At the client's request, the technician files the nails and corrects their contour.
- Coating application. The final stage involves applying color and top coat, as well as completing the design (if necessary).
After completing the procedure for correcting extended nails, nourishing oil is applied to the cuticle and a light hand massage is performed.
Types of nail correction
Beauty salons offer several types of correction. The choice depends on the condition of the coating, the degree of nail plate regrowth, and the presence of damage.
Minor correction
This correction is performed in cases of minor defects (chips, scratches, or small material detachments). The technician levels the surface, adds the necessary amount of gel or acrylic, and renews the finish coat.
Average correction
A medium correction is performed 2–4 weeks after extension or previous correction. In this case, the natural nail has already grown back noticeably, so the technician removes part of the old material, restores the shape and architecture, and, if necessary, changes the design.
Major (complex) correction
This correction is necessary when there are significant detachments or defects. The technician essentially rebuilds the nails from scratch. They remove most of the old coating, correct the shape, fill in any gaps, and strengthen the structure. After that, the design is applied.
How much does nail correction cost?
Correction of extended nails in Kyiv at the Seizó salon costs 1100 UAH.
- removal of old decorative coating;
- sawing off the top layer of the extended material, especially at the junction with the natural nail;
- elimination of detachments;
- repair of damaged areas;
- restoring the shape, length, and architecture of nails.
Please note: Manicures and gel polish are not included in the price of nail extension correction and are paid for separately.
Tips for nail care after the procedure
To ensure that the results of your manicure last as long as possible and your nails remain strong, well-groomed, and healthy, it is important to take proper care of them.
Visit your stylist regularly
Do not delay your next visit. The optimal time for correction of extended nails is 2–4 weeks. During this time, the nail plate grows back sufficiently, and the balance of the structure changes. If you skip a scheduled correction, the risk of brittleness, detachment, and even injury to the natural nail increases.
Moisturize the cuticle
Proper cuticle care is very important. First, it will look neat. Second, healthy cuticles promote the growth of strong, even, and smooth nails. So apply nourishing oil to them every day. It is best to choose cosmetics with vitamins E and F or based on argan or almond oil. Don't forget about moisturizing hand cream. Apply it several times a day, especially after contact with water.
Watch what you eat
Nail health starts from within. To keep them strong and healthy, add the following to your diet:
- biotin (eggs, oatmeal, nuts);
- zinc and iron (seafood, seeds, legumes);
- B vitamins (cereals, green vegetables, avocados);
- omega-3 fatty acids (fish, flaxseed oil).
Avoid contact with harsh chemicals
Any cleaning, dishwashing, or laundry products contain active ingredients that can damage artificial coatings, natural nails, cuticles, and the skin of your hands in general. That is why you should always wear protective gloves when working with household chemicals. This is a simple but effective way to prolong the life of your manicure and prevent damage.
Avoid mechanical stress
Artificial nails are not tools. Do not use them to open packages, cans, or peel off stickers. Even the strongest coating may not withstand such stress.
Timely and regular correction of extended nails is the key to the flawless appearance of your manicure. But do not forget that beautiful and well-groomed nails are the result of professional work by a master and your daily care.
